Due to the Patriot Act restrictions, we are no longer accepting applications from non-US citizens and/or non-permanent residents.
The University of California, San Francisco offers a two-week externship in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The externship program is designed for senior dental students who desire additional training in oral surgery and exposure to hospital-oriented oral and maxillofacial surgery care. For those students inclined towards oral and maxillofacial surgery as a career, the externship provides an excellent opportunity to participate within the framework of the OMFS Residency Training Program. Externs will be supervised by the OMFS faculty and resident staff at the University of California Medical Center and at San Francisco General Hospital. In general, externships begin on the first Monday of the month or the third Monday of the month. Externs can spend a two-week block in our program but no more than two externs per block will be scheduled. Summer months are the most requested times to do externship so please plan ahead if you are interested in coming to UCSF at that time.
Arrangements for room and board must be made by the extern. The housing office may be contacted by calling (415) 476-1426. There may also be housing available at the Psi Omega Fraternity house (Attn: House Manager, 101 Woodland Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94117) during the summer months. Call our office to get the name of the contact person as it changes year by year.
Educational Objectives and Requirements
Objectives
- To obtain experience in ambulatory dentoalveolar surgery.
- To learn the scope of OMFS.
- To obtain experience in management of the hospitalized patient.
- To have the opportunity to evaluate the OMFS Residency Program at the University of California.
Requirements
- Completion of the Junior year of Dental School.
- Class Rank in top 20 percent.
- Availability of 2 weeks.
- Completion of application for an elective at the University of California, San Francisco.
- Enrolled in a Dental school at the time of externship.
- We will require a dean's letter confirming academic good standing.
- We will require a letter from an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon confirming clinical competency.
- $50 application fee. Checks should be payable to UC Regents.
