The University of California San Francisco, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a one-year fellowship position in Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology. The Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology Fellowship at the University of California San Francisco is accredited. Requirements include completion of an oral and maxillofacial surgery training program. Due to University Visa Requirements the fellowship position is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. The goal of our fellowship is to train academic leaders in oral and maxillofacial oncology.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery services, including the surgical management of malignant oral and maxillofacial pathology. The group occupies three modern clinic facilities on the UCSF Parnassus campus. The Department is part of the UC San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Schmidt, the oncology fellowship director, runs an NIH supported laboratory focused on oral cancer. The opportunity and dedicated time to be engaged in basic science or clinical translational research are available.
UC San Francisco Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology Proficiency Statements
The UC San Francisco Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology Fellow will be proficient and able to:
- Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior in interactions with patients and colleagues.
- Evaluate the medical status of oncology patients and determine their ability to tolerate surgical treatment.
- Develop appropriate differential diagnoses and establish a diagnostic plan for the oral and maxillofacial oncology patient.
- Develop a comprehensive treatment plan and provide surgical treatment for the management of oral and maxillofacial oncology.
- Understand the role of radiation therapy and chemotherapy in the treatment and management of malignant tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region.
- Develop a reconstructive treatment plan and provide surgical reconstruction for the oral and maxillofacial oncology patient.
This position is available July 1, 2010 and will be open until filled.

Brief Biography:
At the University of California, San Francisco, Schmidt earned a doctor of dental surgery degree, a medical degree and a Ph.D. in oral biology. During his studies, Schmidt was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon (the national dental honor society), as well as, Alpha Omega Alpha (the national medical honor society). He completed his residency training in general surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery at UCSF Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in head and neck cancer at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center in Portland, Oregon. He is currently an Associate Professor, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program Director and the Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology Fellowship Director. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also the principal investigator of several research studies on oral cancer.
