OMFS Residency Program

The University of California, San Francisco offers an advanced education program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) designed to meet the requirements of the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. The program leads to certification in OMFS and an M.D. degree from the University of California San Francisco or Davis and can be combined with a Ph.D. in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, dependent on satisfactory progress.

These programs are designed to provide the trainee with sufficient didactic and clinical education to meet the requirements of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and to become a knowledgeable practitioner. All trainees are prepared for a career in clinical practice. In addition, they are encouraged to develop skills in teaching and clinical research which will be useful in preparation for an academic career.

PASS applications will be reviewed jointly by the Department of OMFS and the Admissions Committee of the Medical School. Acceptance will occur jointly and advanced standing in the medical school will be granted based on a review of the applicant's dental school curriculum and transcripts. It is expected that the majority of students will enter medical school in the second year, but some will enter the third year.

The Program is accredited for four residents per year in a six year program. The duration of the OMFS/MD program is as follows: PGY I - OMFS Internship; PGYII and III - Medical School; PGY IV -- Medical School, where applicable, MD degree awarded; PGY V -- General Surgery residency; PGY VI - OMFS chief resident. The total OMFS time during this program is 30 months including research time. A slot to Great Britain is available in the chief resident year. A resident salary is paid in the OMFS component and the General Surgery. During the medical school portion of the program, no salary is paid and the appropriate fees must be paid by the resident. Most residents pay fees as California residents.

Ph.D. Track

During the research years for the Ph.D., the trainee will not have any funded salary but will ordinarily be supported by research grants which carry salary support, when available. The Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to write individual Dentist Scientist Award grants.

Brief Biography:

At the University of California, San Francisco, Schmidt earned a doctor of dental surgery degree, a medical degree and a Ph.D. in oral biology. During his studies, Schmidt was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon (the national dental honor society), as well as, Alpha Omega Alpha (the national medical honor society). He completed his residency training in general surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery at UCSF Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in head and neck cancer at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center in Portland, Oregon. He is currently an Associate Professor, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program Director and the Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology Fellowship Director. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also the principal investigator of several research studies on oral cancer.
